Undaunted
Yvonne ESTIENNE. Undaunted: The Life of Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière, Edouard Privat, publisher, Toulouse, 1971, 158 p.
Yvonne Estienne takes Montreal as the starting point for her story and first reconstructs the life of Jérôme Le Royer and the history of the founding of Montreal. The author presents an overview of the works of the Hospitallers of Saint Joseph, first in France, then in Canada, the United States, and Latin America until around 1960.
Author: Yvonne Estienne is a French author of numerous religious works. She wrote Faire face on demand based on numerous existing sources, without providing any references. The preface is by Raoul Follereau, a famous apostle of lepers who knew the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph and their work at the Lazaretto of Tracadie in New Brunswick from 1868 to 1965. Follereau recounts his visit to the village of San Pablo in the Peruvian Amazon, where the Religious Hospitallers arrived in 1948 to care for the people afflicted by leprosy until around 2020.
This book was translated from the original French text entitled Faire face : Vie de Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière.
Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière: His Friends and Enemies
Henri BÉCHARD, SJ, Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière: His Friends and Enemies (1597-1659), Apostolate for Family Consecration, Bloomingdale, Ohio, USA, 1991, 478 p.
Father Henri Béchard, who was perfectly bilingual, nevertheless chose to write a biography of Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière in English even though most of his sources were in French. Published in the United States, thanks to a generous grant from the Organization for the Family Apostolate, of Bloomingdale, Ohio, Father Béchard’s book fulfills its purpose, which is, as Dom Oury confirms in his review published in the journal Études d’histoire religieuse, “to make the life of Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière, a lay saint, known to English-speaking lay people.” (Études d’histoire religieuse, 59, 164–166.)
Author: Henri Béchard, SJ (1909-1990) was a French-American Jesuit who lived in Montreal. He published the bilingual magazine Kateri and a biography to raise awareness of Kateri Tekakwitha, the first North American Indigenous woman to be canonized by the Catholic Church, on October 21, 2012. Father Henri Béchard devoted some forty years to researching and writing his book Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière: His Friends and Enemies (1597-1659).
